Homer Clouse Groves

March 11, 1936 ~ July 22, 2017 (age 81) 81 Years Old


Homer C. Groves, MD, age 81, of Wilmette, Illinois passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, July 22, 2017, after 2 days at St. Clare Hospice House in Baraboo, WI after a long battle with leukemia.  He was born on March 11, 1936, a son of Everett C. and Ruth Y. (Clouse) Groves.  Homer married Marilyn Marks on November 10, 1962, in Wilmette, IL. 

 

He attended New Trier High School in Winnetka, Illinois from 1950 -1954.  From 1954 -1957, Homer attended Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana, where he received a Bachelor of Science degree.  He went on to further his education at the University of Illinois in Chicago, IL from 1957-1961, where he received his medical degree.  From there, Homer had an internship at Evanston Hospital in Evanston, IL from 1961-1962.  Following his internship, Homer did his residency at the Veterans Administration (VA) Hospital in Hines, IL from 1962-1966, which included the Shriners Children’s Hospital, West Suburban Hospital and West Side VA.  In 1967, he was drafted and in 1968, was commissioned in the U.S. Army Medical Corps.  

 

Homer practiced orthopedic surgery at the U.S. Army Vietnam 36th Evacuation Hospital in Vung Tau, where he took care of casualties from the Mekong Delta.  He was transferred north to Phiebu near the A Shau Valley where he took care of the 101st Army Airborne Division.  In 1969, he practiced orthopedic surgery at Henrotin Hospital in Chicago, IL until the hospital closed.  Homer then continued his practice at Chicago Methodist Hospital and Presbyterian Rush North Shore until he retired from private practice in 1995.  From 1995-2015 Homer consulted VA patients and personnel from the Great Lakes Naval training center at Lovell VA in North Chicago, IL.  

 

Homer enjoyed golf, traveling, and being with his family, who will miss him greatly.  He spent 41 summers and many holidays in Green Lake, WI and winters in California.  Most recently he was able to enjoy celebrating his granddaughter Emalyn’s 4th Birthday.

 

Homer is survived by his wife, Marilyn Groves; daughter, Marla (Tom) Summers; granddaughters, Emalyn, Kelsie and Lindsey Summers; sister, Yvonne “Bonnie”  (Tom) Dailey; sister-in-law, Bernice Marks; many nieces and nephews; other relatives and friends.  He was preceded in death by his son, Brett Groves; his parents, Everett and Ruth Groves; his brother, Everett Groves Jr; and nephew, Rhett Groves.
