Francis "Frank" Garro

April 1, 1947 ~ February 3, 2022 (age 74)


Francis “Frank” Michael Garro, age 74, of Princeton, passed away surrounded by his loving family on Thursday, February 3, 2022, at ThedaCare Regional Medical Center in Appleton. He was born in Dyersburg, TN, on April 1, 1947, a son of Samuel and Edith (Nesselbush) Garro.


Frank graduated from Princeton High School, class of 1965, and attended both UW LaCrosse and Wautoma Teachers College. He volunteered to be drafted into the United States Army in September of 1968. Frank served in Korea as a M.P. Dog Handler alongside his beloved K9, Kim, as a member of the 260th M.P. Company – Sentry Dog Platoon. He was promoted to Sergeant and was honorably discharged in 1970.


In 1970, he met the love of his life, Beverly Sauer. They were married on April 15, 1972, at Our Savior’s UCC in Ripon, WI. On July 6, 1970, Frank began his career with the Wisconsin Department of Corrections. After working third shift for nearly 35 years at Waupun Correctional Institution, he retired as a Sergeant. After his retirement in May of 2005, he worked for St. John’s Catholic School and Fox River Auto. He also served a term as a Town of Princeton Supervisor.


Frank was a member of the Knights of Columbus Council #4774 and the Princeton Gun Club. He was best known for his devout Catholic faith and his love of debating politics, especially the first and second amendments. He enjoyed socializing over coffee each morning, completing crossword puzzles and never turned down a chance to pet a dog, especially a Golden Retriever.


Those Frank leaves behind to cherish his memory include his wife of nearly 50 years, Beverly Garro of Princeton; his son, Nicholas (special friend, Kristine) Garro of West Bend, WI; daughter, Marissa (Chad) Poverski of Marinette, WI; step- grandson, Zackary Poverski of Grandbury, TX; 3 sisters, Mary Ann (William) Waltenberry of Ripon, WI, Patricia Garro of Princeton, WI, Barbara (Thomas) Reif of Kingston, WI; numerous nieces and nephews; 2 aunts, Mary Jo (Niels) Hansen of Fox Lake, IL, Martha Green of Harvard, MA; his grand dogs, Bill and Vinny; many other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Samuel and Edith Garro; his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Lyle and Arline Sauer; his grand dogs, Jake, Brody, and Luigi.


A Memorial Mass for Francis Garro will be held on Thursday, February 10, 2022, at 11:00 a.m., with visitation beginning at 9:00 a.m., at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, 1211 W. Main St., in Princeton. Father Dale Grubba will officiate. Francis will be laid to rest with full military honors following the service in St. John’s Catholic Cemetery in Princeton.
