George Eckart Sr. Obituary

George Robert Eckart Sr, age 83, of Princeton, WI, passed away Sunday, November 17, 2024, at SSM Health St. Agnes Hospital in Fond du Lac, WI. He was born on March 27, 1941, in Chicago, IL, the oldest son of the late Robert and Theresa (Bullinger) Eckart.

 

As a youth, George spent time in Illinois including Chicago, Winnetka, and Lake Zurich, where he graduated from Lake Zurich High School, class of 1959. He attended the University of Alaska Anchorage before serving in the United States Marine Corps in 1963-1967, with a year overseas in Vietnam as a helicopter crew chief in 1966-1967. Honorably discharged at the rank of Sergeant, George started working at the Daniel Woodhead Company as an Electrical Engineer in 1970, later rising to Vice President of Engineering.

 

After meeting his wife Catherine, they wed on his 30th birthday, March 27, 1971, in Chicago, Illinois. Together they raised 4 children. They resided in a number of Chicago suburbs which included Wheeling, Palatine and Arlington Heights through 1981, before moving to Evanston, IL until 1996. George served as Scoutmaster for Troop 29 from 1986-1990.

 

George started work in 1993, as a Quality Manager with Barkules family-owned ADA Metal Products, Inc. in Skokie, IL before retiring in 2007. Upon retirement, Cathy and George settled in Princeton, WI in 2007.

 

He is remembered fondly by his family and friends as a fun-loving, devoted father and spouse. George enjoyed cycling, basketball, fishing, golf, reading, cars, boating, history and a myriad of other interests both outdoors and indoors including working as a ski instructor, Scoutmaster and basketball coach. As a cyclist, he won medals competing in Wisconsin races such as Race the Lake at Lake Winnebago. As an electrical engineer and all-around mechanic, George produced several patents for various electrical parts and equipment.

 

He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Catherine (Biedron) Eckart; 3 sons, George (Morna Brothers) Eckart Jr., Peter Eckart, Edward (Heather Verstraete) Eckart; his daughter, Jennifer Eckart; 2 grandchildren, Gwendolyn and Genevieve; brother, Robert Eckart Jr.; sister, Judy (Marvin) Reid.

 

A funeral service for George Robert Eckart Sr. will be held on Friday, November 22, 2024, at 1:30 p.m., with visitation beginning at 11:00 a.m., at the Wachholz and Sons Funeral Home, 303 Harvard St., in Princeton. Msgr. James L. Gunn will officiate. Burial, with full military honors, will follow the service in St. John’s Catholic Cemetery in Princeton.
