Glenn A. West, 84, of Wautoma, WI, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his family on Tuesday, June 6, 2023. He was born on April 5, 1939, in Green Bay, WI, a son of Eugene and Alice (Kapalczynski) West.
Glenn graduated from Wautoma High School in 1958. In January of 1959, he enlisted in the United States Navy and was stationed in San Diego, CA. In 1961, he was transferred to Pearl Harbor, HI, where he met his future wife, Carolyn Badiyo. They were married on July 28, 1962, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Waipahu, Oahu, HI. In 1963, he was assigned to the Pentagon where he worked in the Cuban Situation Room during the Cuban Missile Crisis. He received a national defense medal for his outstanding performance during that time. Glenn was transferred back to Pearl Harbor in 1966, where he finished out his naval career and was honorably discharged in March of 1969. Packing up his family, they moved back to his hometown of Wautoma, WI, where he and Carolyn raised their 5 children. Glenn was a jack of all trades, skilled in many areas, working various jobs throughout his career. He retired from Cummins Corp. in 2004.
Being an avid outdoorsman, he enjoyed fly fishing and deer hunting. He loved watching westerns, the Brewers, the Packers, and going to the casino. Some of his other hobbies included drawing, oil painting, and taxidermy. He loved his dogs and was a huge Elvis fan. He was happiest when out on his John Deere tractor cutting his grass. Glenn had fond memories of fly tying and fishing with his brother Gene, both were members of Trout Unlimited and the Association of Old Anglers and various other Derelicts and Liars.
Those left behind to cherish his memory are his loving wife of 60 years, Carolyn West of Wautoma; his 5 children, Frank (special friend, Shirley) West of Berlin, Debbie (Tim) Ganzel of Wild Rose, Jessica (Todd) Wachholz of Princeton, Joel (Crystal) West of Menasha, Jeff West of Wautoma; 14 grandchildren, Andrew West, Brittany West, Alex West, Chelsea West; Ben Ganzel, Leah Hansen, Katie McCarville; Blake Wachholz, Jared Wachholz; Zackery West, Dylan West, Brayden West; Cullen West, Liam West; 18 great-grandchildren; sister, Kathleen (Juergen) Krueger of Aiken, SC; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Eugene and Alice West; his brother, Eugene West Jr.; sister, Mary Rose Pica; brother-in-law, Frank Pica; sister-in-law, Nancy West; daughter-in-law, Wendy West; his beloved dogs.
A Memorial Mass for Glenn A. West will be held on Monday, June 19, 2023, at 10:30 a.m. with visitation beginning at 9:30 a.m., at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, 364 S. Cambridge St., in Wautoma. Father William Evans will officiate. Full Military Honors will follow the Memorial Mass at the church. Burial will take place at a later date in the Calvary Cemetery in Wautoma.
