James E. Mehling, age 74, of Montello, passed away at his home on Thursday, November 2, 2023. He was born on May 1, 1949, in Hartland, WI, a son of Robert C. and Eunice M. (Cull) Mehling.
Jim proudly served his country in the U.S. Army from August 15, 1969 to October 23, 1970. On September 2, 1972, he married Lana Sue Schroetter in Hartland, WI. Jim worked for and retired from Vulcan Materials in Oshkosh after 30 years of service. Shortly after retiring, he decided to go back to work and took a job at Michels Materials where he worked for another 10 years before he truly retired.
Jim was a member of IUOE Local 139, Local 695 and Local Teamsters 200. He loved riding his Harley and being outdoors. He was an avid fisherman and enjoyed boating.
Those Jim leaves behind to cherish his memory include his loving wife of 51 years, Lana Mehling of Montello; his 3 children, Jeannie (Travis) Mehling-Briones of Cambria, Amy (Marc Lucchi) Mehling of Oshkosh, Jamie (Ervin Shurpit Jr.) Mehling of Neshkoro; 5 grandchildren, Bryce Smith, Jacob Hester, Maddie Smith, Rachel Zills, Carmen Briones; 2 great grandchildren, Jacob Hester Jr. and Hunter Hester; 6 siblings, Judith Tabor, Jerome (Sandra) Mehling, Leo (Eiko) Mehling, Mark (Sharon) Mehling, Donna (Robert) Sizer, Eileen Pape; 5 sisters-in-law, Barb Mehling, Vicki Mehling, Linda (Bob) Knapp, Barbara Griswold, Rosie (Potter) Schroetter; aunt, Dorothy Cull; lifelong friends, Greg Steiner, Bob (Linda) Miller, Wes Hunting, Mark Bierman; his granddogs, Moo, Boomer and Jinx; many other extended family members and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Eunice Mehling; grandson, Cody Neal Hester; 6 siblings, Sharon, Charles, Michael, Patrick, Phillip, Paul; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Louis and Rachel Schroetter; 5 brothers-in-law, Louis Jr., Joseph, John, Tom and Scott Schroetter.
A celebration of Jim’s life will be held on Sunday, November 19, 2023, from noon to 4:00 p.m., at the American Legion Hall, W3008 State Road 23 in Montello, WI.
