Orlo R. Verch, age 79, of Princeton, passed away at his home on Monday, October 19, 2020. He was born at the Ripon Hospital in Ripon, WI, on September 10, 1941, a son of Richard and Alma (Manthey) Verch.
Orlo grew up in Princeton. He attended St. John’s Lutheran Grade School and was a lifetime member of St. John’s Lutheran Church where he was baptized, confirmed and married. Orlo graduated from Princeton High School with the class of 1959. On November 9, 1963, he married the love of his life, Virginia “Ginny” Lange.
In his early adult life, Orlo was a carpenter before turning to farming. After purchasing their first farm, he raised hogs, cattle and cash crops. After the second farm was purchased, he began raising chickens and started his vegetable business. When the family increased with 3 children, the family business became raising strawberries, asparagus along with various other vegetables. One crop that was a lot of work and fun for the entire family were pumpkins. Orlo often talked about the “One Big Weekend” where between the Saturday and Sunday markets they sold over 1000 pumpkins. Both carving and painted pumpkins had been sold. As the grandchildren came along, they also enjoyed helping with the family business.
Orlo truly enjoyed the outdoors, hunting, sturgeon spearing, crow hunts, trap shooting and sporting clays. He treasured the family shoots at the Rod and Gun Clubs, family deer hunts and sturgeon spearing.
Orlo was a staunch supporter of the Class of 1959. Together with Ginny, he enjoyed hosting many of the class reunions, some occurring Friday and Saturday nights with a Sunday gathering at their farm with Ginny doing all the cooking. Orlo and Ginny enjoyed celebrating their anniversaries, having celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 2013 and privileged to enjoy the next 6 ½ years also. They gave many thanks to God for all the blessings they received through the years. Through the years of hard work and fun, Ginny dubbed themselves “The Awesome Twosome.”
With his passing, Orlo leaves behind a “Lonesome Onesome” (until they meet again) his wife of 56 ½ years, Ginny Verch of Princeton; daughter, Dawn Lewis and her children, Brittany, Gregory, Wyatt and Sedona of Oshkosh; son, Daniel (Felicia) Verch and their son, Wayne of Berlin; daughter, Danette (Peter) Luedke and their daughter Anna of Ripon; nephew, Glen (Mary) Otto; niece, Gale (Edwin) Wiersma; many other relatives and lots of wonderful friends he made through the years. He was preceded in death by his parents, Richard and Alma Verch; sister, Margie Otto; brother-in-law, Don Otto.
