Harvey C. Barnekow

September 16, 1932 ~ December 6, 2016 (age 84) 84 Years Old


Harvey C. "Barney" Barnekow, age 84, of Oshkosh, formerly of Princeton, WI was called home in the arms of his Lord on December 6, 2016, after a battle with bone cancer. He was born in South Milwaukee on September 16, 1932, a son of Harvey and Pearl (Manhke) Barnekow. He was baptized and confirmed at Good Shepherd Church on Barnekow Avenue in West Allis, WI.
Harvey's parents owned a butcher shop and grocery store in West Allis until they moved to Green Lake. His family then operated Barnekow's Supper Club on the corner of Hwy 23 & 73 near Princeton. He finished his last 3 years of high school at Ripon High School, graduating in 1950.
Harvey entered the United States Air Force in February of 1952, and served for 4 years. He was a crew member and radar gunner in the famed B-36 bombers, 11th Wing, 26th bomb squadron out of Fort Worth, Texas. The crew was involved in classified training missions here and abroad during the Korean War.
On March 24, 1955, Harvey married the red headed love of his life, Mary L. Schultz. They celebrated 61 years of marriage this year. Together with Harvey's parents, they ran Barnekow's Supper Club until 1969. Harvey and Mary then owned and operated Barnekow's Motel until 2002, when they sold the business. Upon retiring, they moved to Oshkosh.
Harvey was an avid Badger Football fan, Green Bay Packer follower, and a fan of auto racing. Together with his wife, Mary, he enjoyed golfing, hunting and fishing.
On October 26, 2016, Harvey and his grandson, Barret, took part in the Old Glory Honor Flight and accomplished Harvey's goal of his first visit to Washington, DC.
Harvey is survived by his loving wife, Mary Barnekow of Oshkosh; daughter, Jaye (Mark) Roeming of Oshkosh; two very special grandsons, Barret (Mara) Roeming and Tyler (Stephanie) Roeming; three great grandchildren, Caden, Alexis and Benson; sisters-in-law, Lorraine Schultz and Margaret Tetzlaff; brother-in-law, William Schultz; many nieces, nephews, other relatives, and many special friends who were like family to Harvey. He was preceded in death by his parents, Harvey and Pearl Barnekow; father-in-law and mother-in-law, William and Mary E. Schultz; sister-in-law, Roxanne Schultz; 2 brothers-in-law, Richard Schultz, Victor Tetzlaff; nephew, Andrew Tetzlaff.
A funeral service for Harvey C. "Barney" Barnekow will be held on Tuesday, December, 13, 2016, at 5:30 p.m., with visitation beginning at 2:30 p.m., at Grace Lutheran Church, 913 Nebraska St., in Oshkosh. Pastor Jeffrey Duquaine will officiate the service. Military Honors will follow the service at the church. Harvey will be laid to rest at Wisconsin Memorial Park in Brookfield, WI at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Grace Lutheran Church of Oshkosh, 913 Nebraska St, Oshkosh, WI 54902, or Old Glory Honor Flight, P. O. Box 482 Menasha, WI 54952.
